Making art as you move, art as you go.

Travel photography is irresistible. Travelling exposes us to a multitude of new situations and sensory perceptions, and it is an almost innate reaction to want to record these exciting stimuli. Photographs allow us to be creative as we travel, and simultaneously make images that will always remind us of our trip.

Taking photographs as we make our way through foreign countries and strange situations performs the additional function of actually enriching our experiences. Shooting pictures requires that we get more involved with our surroundings, examine them more carefully and look for the contextual associations or subtle energies that imbue meaning to our shots. It demands that we establish rapport with our human or animal subjects, and we find the lines or designs in nature, structures or implements, making us more aware of the richness in every moment.

A good photograph is one that tells a story, placing whoever is looking at it in the context of the shot. We don't just want to convey the message "this is a house" - a more interesting photograph might say "this is a house with the late afternoon sun falling on it, and the children that live here are playing with their dog and laughing."

Any story or message needs a subject - possibly a landscape, a building, your travel companions or the local people in a foreign village. The subject is usually (but not always) the main point of interest in the photograph and therefore located in the foreground of the picture. A second element, the content, gives the picture a voice, and is often the background of the photograph, or elements in the background.
